About This Dish

The Greggs Vegan Roll costs £1.35 and packs 308 calories, exactly matching the classic Sausage Roll on price while trimming about forty calories. Inside sits seasoned Quorn instead of pork, wrapped in the same 96 layer puff pastry, glazed and baked to the same golden finish. Put the two side by side and most people need a bite to tell them apart.

This is the pastry that broke British Twitter in January 2019. Greggs announced it with a mock tech launch video, Piers Morgan called himself sickened, and the Greggs social team replied so sharply that marketing lecturers still quote the exchange. Shops sold out for weeks, some rationing rolls per customer, and the company credited it directly for a jump in sales that year. Veganuary launches became an industry ritual afterwards, and this roll started it.

Taste wise it plays remarkably close to the original. The Quorn filling carries the same peppery seasoning, holds together a touch more firmly than sausage meat, and eats cleaner with less grease through the bag. The pastry behaves identically: crisp shell, soft underside, flakes everywhere. Served hot, the difference shrinks to texture at the centre. Cold, the meat version holds richness slightly better, so order this one when the trays are turning.

The roll was developed with The Vegan Society and contains no animal products, though shared ovens mean Greggs stops short of a cross contamination guarantee. Wheat and soya appear on the allergen list. For plant based eaters it anchors a genuine meal: add Potato Wedges and a black americano and lunch stays under a fiver.

Against the wider menu it stands as more than a substitute. Plenty of meat eaters order it on preference, which is the quiet test any vegan product either passes or fails. Pair it with the Glazed Ring Doughnut to keep the whole order plant based, or check the vegan menu for every option with current prices.

How to Make Vegan Roll Pork-Free at Home

A homemade vegan roll needs vegan puff pastry, a block of plant based sausage filling, and thirty minutes. Most supermarket puff pastry is accidentally vegan, which makes this easier than it sounds.

Tips

  • Frozen plant based sausage meat works; thaw fully and drain excess moisture first.
  • The maple glaze is the colour secret. Plant milk alone bakes pale.
  • Chill assembled rolls for 15 minutes before baking for taller flake.

Variations

  • Add a thin line of caramelised onion chutney under the filling.
  • Smoked paprika in the seasoning pushes it toward a chorizo style roll.
  • Brush with mustard inside the pastry for a sharper finish.

Serving ideas

Warm with brown sauce, or cold in a lunchbox where it holds better than the meat version.

Vegan Roll Pork-Free FAQs

How much is the Greggs Vegan Roll?
It costs £1.35, deliberately matching the classic Sausage Roll. Parity pricing was a launch decision in 2019 and Greggs has held it since.
Is the Greggs Vegan Roll actually vegan?
The recipe contains no animal products and was developed with The Vegan Society. Shops bake everything in shared ovens, so strict avoidance of any cross contact cannot be guaranteed. Most vegans accept it on that basis.
What is the Vegan Roll made of?
Seasoned Quorn mycoprotein in vegan puff pastry, glazed without egg. Wheat and soya appear on the allergen list, so it suits neither coeliacs nor soya allergies.
How many calories does the Vegan Roll have?
It carries 308 calories against 348 in the classic Sausage Roll, with less fat and saturates. Salt runs similar between the two.
Why was the Vegan Sausage Roll renamed the Vegan Roll?
Menu listings changed after a recipe and labelling update; the product itself is the same Quorn filled pastry from the 2019 launch. Our full review covers the story and how the two rolls compare bite for bite.
